ONE WAY SHIP TO IRAQ

I would like to post a poem that my husband wrote
while on a ship going to Iraq.

ONE WAY SHIP TO IRAQ

So there I was 28 years old on a ship heading
   towards destiny
Only God knows what lies ahead
Caught somewhere in between purgatory and hell
   Alive but far from living
Inside my protector
    My prison
Only the occassional glimpse of ocean to feed my
sanity
Daily updates to let me know there is life
beyond my metal companion
Night becomes day but I wouldnt know the
difference without time
  Living to be released
Awake awaiting sleep
Biding time until I return to my coffin.

This poem was written in September.  On October 30,
2004, my husband was one of eight killed in Iraq by a
suicide bomber.  He left behind me (his childhood
sweetheart/wife) and two small children.  4 year old
daughter and 1 year old son.  Through my children my
husband will live on forever.
