Mechanic builds foundation for life with USMC |
By Sgt. Heather L.

For Cpl. Chad M. Bittner, an
airframes mechanic with Marine Light Attack
Helicopter Squadron 167, the Marine Corps has
laid a solid foundation for his future. Bittner,
a native of Meyersdale, Pa., joined the Marines
after high school for many reasons, not the
least of which was the educational benefits
offered to service members.
“I have a few relatives that are in the
military, but my biggest reason for joining the
Marines was the college benefits you can get,”
he said.
Fortunately for Bittner, who entered the Marine
Corps under an open contract, he was given the
military occupational specialty of 6154.
“I came in with an open contract, and was
actually hoping to get an MOS where I’d be
working with fixed-wing aircraft,” he said. “But
it really worked out better this way because
this MOS gives me a better shot of getting a job
working with helicopters in the civilian world.
Plus, I really like flying and working with the
hydraulic systems,” he added.

Combined raid course prepares Marines for deployment |
Cpl. Justin M. Martinez________
22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit |
|

Marines with Kilo and Weapons
Companies, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd
Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 22nd Marine
Expeditionary Unit, learned the art of raids
during a combined raid course held aboard Camp
Lejeune, N.C. Dec 1 - 19, 2008.
Kilo Co. and Weapons Co. spent the first week of
training together, learning the basics of
precision raids in the classroom. During the
next two weeks, each company conducted a series
of four raids to sharpen their skills -- Kilo
Co. during the second week of December and
Weapons Co. during the third week in December.
“Motorized, in Kilo’s case, means we use Humvee
and gun-trucks for this type of raid,” said
Staff Sgt. Clyde Schuyler, an instructor with
the Special Operations Training Group and native
of Chilhowie, Va.
The Marines learned how to use the speed and
surprise a vehicle-mounted force can bring to a
fight to overwhelm enemy forces during several
raid scenarios.
