Description:
  1. Authorized by the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard, July 1, 1987.
  2. Awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States serving in any capacity with the Coast Guard who, after July 1, 1987, participates in a Coast Guard special operation not involving combat.
  3. A bronze service star is awarded and worn on the service ribbon to denote a subsequent award.


Background:
  1. The following categories of special operations represent events for which this ribbon may be authorized.
  • Coast Guard operations of a special nature involving multiple agency involvement pertaining to national security or law enforcement.
  • Coast Guard operations of a special nature in support of special events drawing large media interest and public attention.
  • Coast Guard operations or involvement with foreign government in all areas of saving life and property at sea.
  • Coast Guard operations of assistance for friendly and/or developing nations.
  • This ribbon may not be worn on the Navy or Marine Corps uniform
