Description:
  1. Authorized by the same legislation which established the Navy Silver Star Medal, August 7, 1942.
  2. Awarded pursuant to Section 6246 of 10 U.S.C. to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Marine Corps, distinguishes himself or herself by heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy.


Background:
  1. The Navy and Marine Corps Medal was established in 1942 to recognize non-combat heroism and meritorious service. The most famous recipient of the NMCM was John F. Kennedy, who was a Lt. (jg) at the time he received the award.
